Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
He understands the three worlds and lets go of his pride.
He understands the Word and melts into the True One.
Thinking deeply on the Shabad, he holds love for the One in his heart.
O Nanak, blessed is the Lord, who makes all things beautiful.
Real understanding melts away the proud self and joins the soul to the One.
Taribhavan soojhai aap gavaavai — such a person understands the three worlds, meaning all of creation, and loses the proud self. That proud self is haumai, the feeling of "me first."
This is the point of the whole shabad. Understanding, not performing, is what melts the "me first" away. Think of an ice cube dropped into a warm drink. It softens, then melts, and becomes part of the drink. Baanee boojhai sach samaavai — understanding the Word, the soul melts into the True One.
Then Guru Nanak names the One savaaranhaaraa, the One who makes us beautiful. Another shabad in this raag uses this picture too. The One who takes the soul also makes it lovely.
What understanding has actually changed you, not just informed you?
