Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 258
Verse 1 of 9

No Book Can Contain the Infinite

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
laykh asaNkh likh likh maan.
There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them.
ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥
man maanee-ai sach surat vakhaan.
When one's mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it.
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kathnee badnee parh parh bhaar.
Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads.
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
laykh asaNkh alaykh apaar. ||1||
There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1||

In plain words

There are countless writings, and those who write them take pride in them.

But when the mind accepts the Truth, it understands, and speaks of it.

Words spoken and read over and over are useless loads; the countless writings remain — yet the Infinite One stays unwritten.

No book can contain the Infinite — only a heart that accepts the truth truly understands.
The deeper layer

No book can hold the Infinite One.

Laykh asankh likh likh maan — there are countless writings, and the writers feel proud of them. But words read and said again and again, parh parh bhaar, can turn into a heavy load. They are like a backpack stuffed with books you never open.

What really matters is a mind that accepts the Truth. Man maanee-ai sach — when the mind accepts the Truth, it understands and can speak of it.

The verse ends with a big idea. Laykh asankh alaykh apaar — writings are countless, yet the Infinite One stays unwritten. You cannot pour the whole ocean into a cup. In the same way, no words can hold all of the One. Only a heart that says yes to the Truth begins to understand.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between reading about something and truly taking it in?
