Verse 5 of 9

The Real Loss Is a Life That Never Heard the Music

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
nirbha-o aap nirantar jot.
He Himself is Fearless; His Divine Light is contained in all.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਗਿ ਛੋਤਿ ॥
bin naavai sootak jag chhot.
Without the Name, the world is defiled and untouchable.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਤਿ ॥
durmat binsai ki-aa kahi rot.
Through evil-mindedness, they are ruined; why should they cry out and weep?
ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥੪॥
janam moo-ay bin bhagat sarot. ||4||
They are born only to die, without hearing the music of devotional worship. ||4||

In plain words

He Himself is Fearless; His Light is in all.

Without the Name, the world is defiled; through evil-mindedness, they are ruined — why weep? They are born only to die, never hearing the music of devotion.

The real loss is not death, but a life that never once heard the music of devotion.
The deeper layer

This one says the real loss is not dying. It is a life that never heard the music.

Nirbha-o aap nirantar jot — the Fearless One's light is in everyone. Nirbhau means "Fearless."

Bin naavai sootak jag chhot — without the Name, the world is unclean. Sootak was an old idea that a home became "impure" after a birth or a death. The verse moves the idea inside. What really makes life unclean is living without the Name.

The sad part is a life janam moo-ay bin bhagat sarot — born and gone without ever hearing the music of love for the One. Never once awake to the song.

Think of living next to a beautiful park and never once going in. That missing out, not death itself, is the real loss.

A Question to Sit With

What is the 'music' you would not want to live your whole life without hearing?
