The Smartest Minds Can't Measure the Bottomless

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
sabh surtee mil surat kamaa-ee.
All the contemplators met together and practiced contemplation;
ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sabh keemat mil keemat paa-ee.
all the appraisers met together and tried to appraise You.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਹਾਈ ॥
gi-aanee Dhi-aanee gur gur haa-ee.
The theologians, the meditators and the teachers of teachers
ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
kahan na jaa-ee tayree til vadi-aa-ee. ||2||
could not express even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||

In plain words

All the deep thinkers gathered together and thought as hard as they could. All the judges gathered and tried to size You up.

The scholars, the meditators, the greatest teachers of teachers — together they could not express even the tiniest speck of how great You are.

The smartest minds in the world, all together, still can't measure what is bottomless.
The deeper layer

Even the smartest people in the world, working together, cannot measure the One.

Guru Nanak gathers the best experts you could imagine. Sabh surtee mil surat kamaa-ee — all the deep thinkers met and thought together. All the appraisers, the people who judge worth, tried to set a value on the One. The wise, the meditators, the teachers of teachers — all of them joined in.

And still, kahan na jaa-ee tayree til vadi-aa-ee — they could not describe even a sesame seed's worth of Your greatness. This is not saying thinking is bad. It says the One is a different kind of thing. Think of trying to measure love with a ruler. A better ruler would not help. That is why being humble here is simply being honest.

A Question to Sit With

Why might the cleverest explanation still miss the most important thing?
