In plain words

One who contemplates his own self tests the worth of the jewel.

With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him; when the Guru is pleased, the mind comforts itself.

Look honestly within, and you test the worth of the jewel you carry.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: look inside yourself, and you will learn the worth of the jewel you carry.

Aap veechaarai so parkhay heeraa — the one who looks honestly at himself tests the worth of the diamond. A jeweler tests a stone to see if it is real. Knowing yourself is like that test. The jewel is the soul inside you, lit by the One.

Then, ayk darisat taaray gur pooraa — with a single glance, the Perfect Guru carries you across. One look of grace is enough. When the Guru is pleased, the mind grows calm and steady on its own. Another hymn in this raag also speaks of this one saving glance.

A Question to Sit With

What 'jewel' might you find if you looked honestly within?
