Verse 3 of 9

Deal in the Name and the Trade Itself Makes You Pure

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
poonjee naam niranjan saar.
The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime.
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
nirmal saach rataa paikaar.
That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth.
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
sifat sahj ghar gur kartaar. ||2||
Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2||

In plain words

The Name is a pure and precious treasure to trade with.

The trader soaked in Truth is made pure. Praising the One, in a home of calm, he finds the Guru, the Creator.

Deal in the Name, and the trade itself makes you pure.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: trade in the Name, and the trading itself makes you pure.

He uses a picture from the market. Poonjee naam niranjan saar — the Name is your poonjee, the money you start a business with, and it is spotless and precious. The trader who is soaked in Truth becomes clean through that very trade. Another hymn in this raag says the same: dealing in the Name makes us true.

Think of a baker whose hands smell of fresh bread all day, just from working with it. Whatever you spend your days handling rubs off on you. Praising the One, the trader rests in sahj, calm peace, and finds the Guru, the Creator.

A Question to Sit With

How does what you spend your days dealing in shape who you become?
