Verse 4 of 9

Real Devotion Overflows Into Others

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
aasaa mansaa sabad jalaa-ay.
One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad,
ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
raam naraa-in kahai kahaa-ay.
chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
gur tay vaat mahal ghar paa-ay. ||3||
Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

One who burns away hope and desire through the Word chants the Name.

He inspires others to chant it too. Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Lord's Presence.

Real devotion overflows — you chant, and others begin to chant with you.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: real devotion spills over into other people.

Aasaa mansaa sabad jalaa-ay — through the Word, a person burns away hope and wanting. Aasaa and mansaa here mean the endless wishes and cravings of the mind. Once those are gone, the person repeats the Name, and helps others repeat it too. Love for the One is like a laugh that spreads around the table. You cannot keep it to yourself. Another hymn in this raag also speaks of devotion flowing out to others.

Then gur tay vaat mahal ghar paa-ay — through the Guru, he finds the road home, to the palace where the One lives. It is the way back to where the soul belongs.
