Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 262
Verse 10 of 11

Pray to Be Placed Where Sufferings Dissolve

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
har jee-o aagai karee ardaas.
I offer my prayer to the Lord,
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
saaDhoo jan sangat ho-ay nivaas.
that I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥
kilvikh dukh kaatay har naam pargaas. ||9||
There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord's Name. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I offer my prayer to the One,

that I might live in the company of the holy.

There, sins and sorrows are wiped away, and the Name lights one up.

The prayer is simply to be placed in the company where sins and sufferings dissolve.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak's prayer here is simple: let me live among good people.

Har jee-o aagai karee ardaas — I offer my prayer to the One. He asks to live in the Saadh Sangat, the company of the holy. There, wrongs and sorrows are wiped away, and the Name shines like a light.

Notice what he does not ask for. Not a big prize for himself alone. He asks to be placed among the people who help each other grow.

Think of a campfire on a cold night. Sit close to it with others, and you all get warm. The good company does the work.

A Question to Sit With

What company would you pray to be kept in?
