Verse 5 of 9

Truth's Seed Is Sound; Will Your Ground Open?

ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kalar khaytee beejee-ai ki-o laahaa paavai.
Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit?
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
manmukh sach na bheej-ee koorh koorh gadaavai. ||4||
The self-willed manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. ||4||

In plain words

Plant seeds in rocky soil, and what harvest will you get?

The self-willed manmukh takes no pleasure in Truth; the false are buried in their falsehood.

Truth's seed is sound — the question is whether your ground will open for it.
The deeper layer

Truth is a good seed. The question is whether our heart will open to let it grow.

This is a farmer's verse. Kalar khaytee beejee-ai ki-o laahaa paavai — if you plant in kalar, rocky, salty ground, how can you get a harvest? The seed of Truth is always good. But rock grows nothing. A heart shut tight by manmukh ways, following only its own wants, is like that rock.

Notice where the problem is. It is not the farmer, and not the seed. It is the ground that won't open. Manmukh sach na bheej-ee — the self-willed person doesn't enjoy Truth. It isn't that they don't know it. They don't like the taste, because Truth never flatters the proud "me." The verse ends with a hard picture: the false get buried in falsehood. Think of a seed dropped on a sidewalk. It just sits there until the dust covers it.

A Question to Sit With

When someone tells you a truth you don't like, does your ground open or harden?
