rovhu sach salaahi hukam pachhaanhoo. ||3||
Weep by praising the True Lord, and recognize His Command. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why do you weep for the dead? You do not yet know how to weep.

Weep by praising the True Lord — and recognize His Command in what has happened.

Weep — but let the tears flow toward the True One, not against Him.
The deeper layer

This one teaches how to cry when someone we love has died.

mo-i-aa ka-o ki-aa rovhu — why do you weep for the dead? ro-ay na jaanhoo — you do not know how to weep. The verse does not say "don't cry." It says there is a right way to cry.

Here is the way: rovhu sach salaahi — weep while praising the True One. Let your tears flow toward the One, not against the One. And inside the sadness, hukam pachhaanhoo — recognize the Hukam, the Command. That is the great flow that brought the person into the world and has now carried them on.

Think of a family crying together while singing a loved one's favorite song. The tears are still real. But the sadness becomes thanks and remembering. Grief like this does not get smaller. It gets deeper, and it turns into love.

A Question to Sit With

How might crying and thanking happen at the same time?
