Devotion Is Not a Shield but the Meaning That Survives

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥

If it pleases the Commander, one goes to His Court, robed in honor.

By His Command, God's slaves are hit over the head. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When it pleases the Commander, one goes to His Court robed in honor.

And by His Command, even God's own servants are struck over the head.

Devotion is not a shield against blows — it is the meaning that survives them.
The deeper layer

This one is honest: good people get hurt too.

The same Will that dresses some people in honor also lets hard knocks fall on the faithful. Guru Nanak does not pretend that loving the One keeps you safe from every trouble. Nearby in this same raag, he wrote about the invasion of Babar's army, when good people suffered too.

So what does faith give? Not a shield, but meaning. Think of a team that loses a hard game but knows they played it the right way. The loss still hurts. But it is not empty.

Even the hard knock happens inside the one Will that also gives honor. The servant of the One trusts the Giver in good weather and in bad.

A Question to Sit With

Can you trust someone's love even when they allow something painful?
