Ask for the One Thing and Everything Arrives

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥
naanak mangai sach gurmukh ghaalee-ai.
Nanak begs for the True Name, which is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥
mai tujh bin avar na ko-ay nadar nihaalee-ai. ||9||16||
Without You, I have no other at all; please, bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||9||16||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak begs for one thing only: the True Name, which comes to the Gurmukh.

Without You I have no other at all — bless me with Your Glance of Grace.

Ask for the one thing — and everything the hymn promised arrives inside the asking.
The deeper layer

This one is a prayer that asks for just one thing.

naanak mangai sach — Nanak asks for the True Name. That gift comes to the Gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru. Then comes the heart of the prayer: mai tujh bin avar na ko-ay — without You, I have no one else.

The last word is nadar, the Glance of Grace. It is the loving look of the One.

Think of a child in a crowded hall, looking for one face. When their parent's eyes find them, that is all they need. The whole shabad has talked about roads, profit, and courts. It ends with a simple look of love, given to the one who asked for nothing else.

A Question to Sit With

If you could beg the One for a single thing, what would it honestly be right now?
