What would the people lose, if I became pleasing to You, O Lord? ||1||

In plain words

One whose mind is dyed in the Lord's Name speaks the Truth.

And what would the people lose, if I became pleasing to You?

When a soul turns to the One, nothing is subtracted from anyone — so whose permission was needed?
The deeper layer

When someone turns to the One, nobody else loses anything.

The shabad starts with a picture and then asks a question with a little smile in it. The picture: man raata-o har naa-ay. Raata-o means dyed. The mind is soaked in the Name like cloth soaked in color. And just as color comes out of dye, true words come out of that mind.

Then the question: lokaa daa ki-aa jaa-ay jaa tudh bhaani-aa — what do other people lose if I please You? Sometimes people act as if loving the One takes something away from them. Think of one kid in class learning to read really well. No one else's book gets fewer words. Nobody's account goes down when a soul turns toward the One. The people who complained have lost nothing, except maybe their excuse.

A Question to Sit With

Has anyone ever discouraged you from something good — and what had it cost them?
