Ask for the Work Itself; the Assignment Is the Wage

True is Your Service; bless me with it, O Merciful Lord.

ha-o jeevaa tuDh saalaahi mai tayk aDhaar tooN. ||2||
I live by praising You; You are my Anchor and Support. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

True is Your service — bless me with it, O Merciful One.

I live by praising You; You are my anchor and my support.

Ask for the work itself — in this economy, the assignment is the wage.
The deeper layer

Getting to serve the One is itself the gift.

Sachee tayree kaar deh da-i-aal toon — true is Your service, bless me with it, Kind One. Notice the surprise. The singer does not say, "Let me help You," like a volunteer offering time. The singer asks for the work as a present. The job is the prize.

Think of a child who begs to help Grandma knead the dough. Being allowed to help is the treat. Gurbani says this again and again: the chance to serve is a gift of grace.

Then the second line: ha-o jeevaa tudh saalaahi — I live by praising You. Praise is not a chore. It is like breathing. And tayk adhaar, anchor and support, are real, like the posts that hold up a house.

A Question to Sit With

Is there work you would beg to do even if no one paid or praised you for it?
