Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am Your servant, the gatekeeper at Your Gate — You alone know my pain.

How full of wonder is Your devotion! It carries the pain away.

Wonder is how pain is carried away — awe enlarges the heart past the ache.
The deeper layer

Wonder at the One is what carries pain away.

The singer takes a job: darvaan, the gatekeeper at the One's door. A gatekeeper belongs to the house but stays humble at the doorway. And this gatekeeper is given something special: darad toon jaanhee — You alone know my pain. Being truly understood is a gift the world does not always give.

Then comes the gentlest part. Bhagat tayree hairaan — Your devotion is full of wonder. Hairaan means amazed. And that wonder is what takes the pain away.

Think of lying on the grass and looking up at a huge starry sky. Your worries do not vanish, but suddenly they feel smaller. Wonder makes the heart bigger, so pain no longer fills all of it.

A Question to Sit With

When something amazed you completely, where did your worries go for that moment?
