Verse 8 of 9

Serve the Priceless and Be Paid in Standing Near

ਸਚੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੈ ॥
sachay sachee daat deh da-i-aal hai.
True is the gift of the True, Compassionate Lord.
ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲੁ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
tis sayvee din raat naam amol hai. ||7||
Day and night, I serve the One whose Name is priceless. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

True is the gift of the True and Compassionate One.

Day and night I serve the One whose Name is priceless.

Serve the priceless and you are paid in the standing-near.
The deeper layer

Serving the One is its own payment.

This verse is calm and settled, as songs often are near their end. Sachay sachee daat — the gift is true because the Giver is true. The Giver is da-i-aal, which means kind and caring.

Tis sayvee din raat — day and night, I serve that One. The gatekeeper from the third verse is now simply at home at the door. Serving has become a way of living.

The Name is amol, priceless. That means no one could ever put a price tag on it. Think of sitting next to your grandparent while they tell stories. Nobody pays you to be there. Being close is the reward.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life do you value beyond any price — and how do you serve it?
