Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You are exalted, and I am lowly — yet I am called Your servant.
Shower Nanak with Your Glance of Grace, that this separated one may merge with You again.
Being called the One's servant already closes the gap between us.
The last verse measures the distance. Toon utam ha-o neech — You are high, and I am low. Then comes a small miracle in the middle of the line: sayvak kaandhee-aa — I am called Your servant. Being given that name is like being adopted into the family.
Think of a new kid who gets picked for the team and handed a jersey with their name on it. They belong now. The name closes the gap.
The final prayer gathers up the whole raag. Nadar means the One's kind look. Milai sach vaandhee-aa — may the one who is far away be joined again. Raag Aasaa often sees souls as ones who have wandered apart. Its hope is sure: being apart is never the last word.
What does it mean to you that you can be small and still belong completely?
