The Wheel of Coming and Going Runs on Separateness

How can coming and going, the cycle of reincarnation be ended? And how can one meet the Lord?
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੋਈ ॥੧॥
janam maran kaa dukh ghano nit sahsaa do-ee. ||1||
The pain of birth and death is so great, in constant skepticism and duality. ||1||

In plain words

How can the coming and going — the endless cycle — be stopped? And how can the meeting with the One happen?

The pain of birth and death is heavy, and doubt and duality gnaw at us constantly.

The wheel of coming and going runs on one fuel: the feeling of being separate.
The deeper layer

The final Mehl 1 Ashtapadee of the raag opens with the two questions every seeker eventually asks in one breath: how does the wheel stop, and how does the meeting happen? They are one question — the coming-and-going is the not-yet-meeting. And the second line names the engine of the wheel with precision: sahsaa do-ee — gnawing doubt and duality, the constant suspicion of twoness. The cycle is not powered from outside; it runs on the fuel of feeling separate.

A Question to Sit With

What would stop turning in you if you were certain you were not alone?
