You Can't Win on the Ego's Board; Step Off It

ਹਉਮੈ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਖੇਲਣਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
ha-umai cha-uparh khaylnaa jhoothay ahaNkaaraa.
The game of chance is played on the board of egotism, with the pieces of falsehood and ego.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹਾਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਿਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
sabh jag haarai so jinai gur sabad veechaaraa. ||5||
The whole world loses; he alone wins, who reflects upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||5||

In plain words

The world plays its game of dice on the board of egotism, with pieces of falsehood and pride.

And the whole world is losing. The winner is the one who reflects on the Guru's Word.

You cannot win on the ego's board — the winning move is stepping off it.
The deeper layer

From theater to casino: the world as a chaupar board — the ancient dice-game — where the board itself is haumai and every piece is carved from falsehood and ahankaar. The house always wins because the house is the ego, and every move made on its board pays it tribute; you cannot win a game whose rules are the problem. The second line names the only winning move, and it is the one the board does not contain: stepping off — into reflection on the Shabad. Sometimes the deepest strategy is refusing the game.

A Question to Sit With

What game are you playing where even winning would leave you empty?
