Verse 7 of 9

Faith Holds What Reaches One Step Ahead

ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਹਥਿ ਟੋਹਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥
ji-o anDhulai hath tohnee har naam hamaarai.
As is the cane in the hand of the blind man, so is the Lord's Name for me.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਉਤ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੬॥
raam naam har tayk hai nis da-ut savaarai. ||6||
The Lord's Name is my Support, night and day and morning. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As the cane is in the blind man's hand — so is the Name in mine.

The Name of the Lord is my support, night and day and morning.

Faith is not seeing the whole road — it is holding what reaches one step ahead of you.
The deeper layer

After the show and the game, the hymn's tenderest image, and one of Guru Nanak's humblest: the blind man's cane. Not a torch that restores sight — a cane: something gripped in the dark, tapping the next step, making the unseen walkable. The confession inside the simile is complete: I do not see the way; I am not promised sight on demand; and I am not lost, because what I hold reaches ahead of what I know. Faith, in this verse, is not vision. It is contact — night, day, and morning — with what guides.

A Question to Sit With

When you cannot see how things will work out, what do you actually hold on to?
