Befriend the One Companion Who Crosses the Last Border

ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥

As You keep me, Lord, I live; the Lord's Name is my only Support.

It is my only comfort in the end; the gate of salvation is found by His humble servants. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As You keep me, so I live — the Name is my one support.

In the end it is the only companion; through it Your servants find the gate of liberation.

Make friends now with the one companion who crosses the last border.
The deeper layer

The surrender-verse, in the raag's now-familiar grammar: as You keep me, I live — the creature's arithmetic, stated as rest rather than resignation. And then the sober accounting of the end: ant sakhaa-ee — the companion at the last. Everything else in the caravan is contracted only to the border: wealth, titles, even the beloved bodies beside us walk only so far. One companion crosses. To befriend the Name now is simply to make the acquaintance, in easy times, of the only friend whose company survives the crossing — and whose door, it turns out, is the gate of liberation itself.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what will be with you at the very end — and are you tending that friendship now?
