Verse 9 of 9

Our Part Is Not Forgetting; the Carrying Is His

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
janam maran dukh mayti-aa jap naam muraaray.
The pain of birth and death is removed, by chanting and meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੨੨॥
naanak naam na veesrai pooraa gur taaray. ||8||22||
O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, is saved by the Perfect Guru. ||8||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The pain of birth and death is erased — by meditating on the Name of the One.

O Nanak, whoever does not forget the Name is carried across by the Perfect Guru.

Our whole part is not forgetting — the carrying was always the Guru's.
The deeper layer

The final verse answers the opening question with the hymn's whole journey folded inside it. How does the coming and going stop? Like this: the Name remembered until it will not be forgotten, and the Perfect Guru doing the carrying — taaray, ferried across, the raag's oldest image of grace floating what cannot float itself. Note the humble size of the human contribution in the closing line: not conquering, not achieving — merely not forgetting. The whole vast machinery of liberation, and our part is to keep holding the cane.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember what matters — and what makes you forget?
