In plain words

Everything is inside the home of your own self; outside it, there is nothing to find.

By the Guru's grace it is obtained — and the shutters of the inner heart swing open.

You are not far from the treasure — you are locked out of your own house, and the Guru holds the key.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das says everything you are really looking for is already inside you.

The whole shabad is in the first line. The other lines help us believe it. Gharai andar sabh vath hai — everything is inside the house. Baahar kichh naahee — outside, there is nothing. Not "less" outside. Nothing. Nothing of the kind the soul is really shopping for.

The second line gives the key and a surprise. The doors that open are kapat, shutters, and they are inside the heart. Grace, the Guru's kindness, opens them.

Picture standing outside your own front door, patting your pockets for a key you cannot find. Everything you need is right there inside. You are not far from the treasure. You are just locked out of your own home, and the Guru is the one who lets you in.

A Question to Sit With

If everything you truly need is already within you, what are you still shopping for outside?
