Verse 5 of 9

Hear It, Trust It, Praise It: the Name Is the Doorway

ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
naam sunee-ai naam mannee-ai naamay vadi-aa-ee.
They listen to the Naam, believe in the Naam, and through the Naam, they obtain glory.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥
naam salaahay sadaa sadaa naamay mahal paa-ee. ||4||
They praise the Naam, forever and ever, and through the Naam, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||4||

In plain words

They listen to the Name, they place their faith in the Name, and through the Name comes their glory.

They praise the Name forever and ever — and through the Name, the Mansion of the Presence is found.

Hear it, trust it, praise it — and the Name itself turns out to be the doorway.
The deeper layer

This one says hearing, trusting, and praising the Name is the doorway home.

naam sunee-ai naam mannee-ai — listen to the Name, trust the Name. Japji Sahib teaches the same steps: Suniai, deep listening, and Mannai, trusting and taking it to heart. Here they are strung on one thread, the Name.

First you hear it deeply. Then you trust it. Then that trust rises up as praise. Each step brings a gift. The last gift is naamay mahal paa-ee — through the Name, you find the Mahal, the home where the One is present.

Think of a favorite song. First you hear it. Then you know it by heart. Then you are singing it out loud. The Name is not just a key to the door. It is the door. And those who live in it find they are already inside.

A Question to Sit With

Of the three — truly listening, truly trusting, truly praising — which comes hardest to you?
