Verse 6 of 9

Light, Honor, Peace, Refuge: Four Gifts, One Mint-Mark

ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
naamay hee ghat chaannaa naamay sobhaa paa-ee.
Through the Naam, their hearts are illumined, and through the Naam, they obtain honor.
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੫॥
naamay hee sukh oopjai naamay sarnaa-ee. ||5||
Through the Naam, peace wells up; I seek the Sanctuary of the Naam. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Through the Name the heart is illumined; through the Name, honor comes.

Through the Name peace wells up — I take the Sanctuary of the Name.

Light, honor, peace, refuge — four gifts, one mint-mark.
The deeper layer

This one says all the best gifts come from one place: the Name.

The bell of the Name keeps ringing. Each ring lands on a gift. naamay hee ghat chaannaa — through the Name, the heart is lit up. Through the Name comes honor. Through the Name, peace wells up from inside, like a spring.

These are gifts this raag has talked about before. Now they are all traced back to one source: naamay hee, the Name alone. Think of finding out that all your birthday presents, from every direction, were really from one grandparent.

So the singer does the wise thing: naamay sarnaa-ee — I take shelter in the Name.

A Question to Sit With

Of light, honor, peace, and refuge — which does your life most need right now?
