Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 284
Verse 8 of 9

Don't Merely Use the Name; Serve It

ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
naamai kee sabh sayvaa karai gurmukh naam bujhaa-ee.
Those Gurmukhs who realize the Naam, all serve the Naam.
ਨਾਮਹੁ ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੭॥
naamhu hee naam mannee-ai naamay vadi-aa-ee. ||7||
So believe in the Naam, and only the Naam; through the Naam, glorious greatness is obtained. ||7||

In plain words

Those turned Guru-ward, in whom the Name is awakened — their whole service is service of the Name.

So trust the Name, and the Name alone — through the Name comes the true greatness.

Do not merely use the Name — serve it, and every other duty folds into the one allegiance.
The deeper layer

This one says not just to use the Name, but to serve it.

naamai kee sabh sayvaa karai — they give all their service to the Name. That means more than using the Name to get something. It means shaping your life around it. You give it your best time. You honor it in how you act.

The Gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru, is naam bujhaa-ee, awake to the Name. For them, every other duty fits inside this one.

Think of a musician who loves music. They do not just play to win prizes. They practice every day because they love it. Then comes naamay vadi-aa-ee, greatness through the Name. That greatness is not a payment for serving. Serving the Name is the greatness.

A Question to Sit With

What do you serve — arrange your hours around, give your best energy to — whether or not you chose it?
