Everything Stands Inside the Name's Jurisdiction

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

He alone receives it, unto whom it is given. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Naam is realized.

O Nanak, everything is under the influence of the Naam; by perfect good destiny, a few obtain it. ||8||7||29||

In plain words

It comes to the one to whom He gives it — through the Guru's Teachings the Name is realized.

O Nanak, everything is under the sway of the Name — by perfect destiny, some rare one receives it.

Everything stands inside the Name's jurisdiction — and the key to the city is given, not seized.
The deeper layer

This one says the Name is a gift, and everything lives under its care.

After so many verses ringing with "the Name, the Name," the last verse puts things in order. jis no dayvai tis milai — the one who is given it, receives it. Nobody grabs it by saying it enough. The Guru's teaching helps us understand it.

Then comes the biggest line of the shabad: sabh kichh naavai kai vas hai — everything is under the power of the Name. Storms and kingdoms, the five strong pulls inside us, even death itself.

Think of a big city where every street and building sits inside one country's borders. The Name is not one power among many. It is the whole country they all stand in. And some rare, blessed person is given the freedom of the whole city.

A Question to Sit With

If everything ultimately answers to one authority, what changes about what you fear?
