The Thirst That Started the Song Ends as an Ocean

ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
sukh saagar pareetam milay upjay mahaa anand.
I have met my Beloved, the Ocean of Peace, and Supreme Bliss has welled up within me.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਮਿਟੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭੇਟੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥੮॥੧॥੨॥
kaho naanak sabh dukh mitay parabh bhaytay parmaanand. ||8||1||2||
Says Nanak, all my pains have been eradicated, meeting with God, the Lord of Supreme Bliss. ||8||1||2||

In plain words

I met my Beloved — the whole Ocean of Peace — and a huge, deep happiness rose up inside me like a spring.

Every ache, every sorrow melted away, the moment I met the One who is joy itself.

The thirst that started the song ends as an ocean — and every ache dissolves in the meeting.
The deeper layer

The homecoming the whole hymn was sailing toward. Sukh saagar preetam milay — the Beloved is an Ocean of Peace, and meeting that ocean, upjay mahaa anand — supreme bliss wells up, rises from within like a spring finding its source. The pains don't get argued away or endured; they mitay — are erased — in the meeting itself. And the closing name is parmaanand, the Lord of Supreme Bliss: the destination of all that thirst and longing turns out to be joy itself. The love that began as thirst in the Pause ends as an ocean.

A Question to Sit With

What is a joy so full that, while it lasts, the aches simply melt away?
