Verse 2 of 8

Every Living Thing Is Fed From One Source

ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਆ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
tooN daataa jee-aa sabhnaa kaa tayraa ditaa pahirahi khaa-ay. ||2||
You are the Giver of all beings; they eat and wear what You give them. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the Giver for every living thing. Everyone eats what You provide and wears what You give. All of it comes from You.

Every living thing is fed and clothed from one generous source — including you.
The deeper layer

This one says the One gives to every living thing.

The One is "daataa", the Giver. "Tayraa ditaa pahirahi khaa-ay" — everyone eats and wears what You give.

Picture one huge family kitchen that feeds the whole world. Every creature, with no one left out, is fed and clothed from that same place.

So the world is one big household, cared for by one open hand. At the root of it, nothing is earned. Food and clothes, the most basic needs, are given.

For a child, this is solid ground under everything. You are already cared for. And so is every other living thing, by the same kind Giver.

A Question to Sit With

What are some of the everyday things you're given that are easy to forget to be thankful for?
