Easy Days and Hard Days Come From the Same Hand

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
sukh dukh tayree aagi-aa pi-aaray doojee naahee jaa-ay. ||3||
Pleasure and pain come by Your Will, O Beloved; they do not come from any other. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The happy days and the hard days both come from Your wish — there's no other place they come from.

The easy days and the hard days come from the same trusted hand — nothing falls outside its care.
The deeper layer

This one says the happy days and the hard days come from the same loving hand.

"Sukh dukh tayree aagi-aa" — joy (sukh) and pain (dukh) both come by Your order. "Doojee naahee jaa-ay" — there is no other place they come from.

That is a big idea, said simply. The good times and the hard times are not coming from two enemy powers, one kind and one cruel. They come from the same hand we trust.

It does not make hard days easy. But it changes what they mean. Nothing that happens has slipped outside the care of the One. There is no side door for trouble to sneak in.

Think of a rainy day spent at home with someone who loves you. The rain is still rain. But you are not out in it alone. Held inside a love you trust, even the hard days do not mean you have been left.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change how a hard day feels to think it isn't happening by accident or against you?
