Verse 15 of 36

Keeping Up a False Front Is Exhausting and Pointless

tatai tanch karahu ki-aa paraanee gharhee ke muhat ke uth chalnaa.
Tatta: Why do you practice hypocrisy, O mortal? In a moment, in an instant, you shall have to get up and depart.
ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਭਾਜਿ ਪੜਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧੪॥
joo-ai janam na haarahu apnaa bhaaj parhahu tum har sarnaa. ||14||
Don't lose your life in the gamble - hurry to the Lord's Sanctuary. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why pretend to be something you're not? In the blink of an eye, it's time to get up and go.

Don't gamble your one precious life away — hurry instead into the shelter of the One.

Keeping up a false front is exhausting and pointless — drop the mask and run toward what's real.
The deeper layer

The letter Tatta (the retroflex one) is urgent and clarifying: koorh kamaaveh — why practice hypocrisy, why keep up a false front? Because khin mahi — in a moment — you'll have to rise and leave. Pretending takes enormous energy, and it's spent on something that ends in an instant. The alternative is put as a race: harni-aa saran chal — hurry to the Sanctuary. Not someday — now. Drop the mask, stop gambling away the days, and run toward what's real while you can.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your life could you stop pretending and just be honestly yourself?
