No Words Can Measure the One

ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ਅਕਥੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਿਆ ॥

Your limits cannot be known; the indescribable Lord cannot be described.

O Nanak, whose who have met the True Guru, have their accounts settled. ||18||1||2||

In plain words

The One is so vast that no words could ever measure or describe it.

And the heart that finds true guidance finds its account gently settled — nothing left owing.

No words can measure the One — and a heart that finds true guidance finds its account gently settled.
The deeper layer

The poem closes where it must — at the edge of language: keemat na pavai... akath — the One's limit cannot be known, the indescribable cannot be described. All the letters of the alphabet, all the words of the poem, finally bow before what no word can hold. And the last line answers the Pause that opened the poem: the Pause worried about an account that calls you to pay; the ending resolves it — satgur milay... lekhaa samajh — those who meet the true guide have their account settled, the debt cleared. The poem that began with a warning about debt ends with the debt forgiven.

A Question to Sit With

Out of this whole alphabet of lessons, which one do you most want to carry with you?
