Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 306
Verse 4 of 10

When the Mind Comes Home, a Hidden Door Opens

satgur mili-ai Dhaavat thamiH-aa nij ghar vasi-aa aa-ay.
Meeting the True Guru, the wandering mind is held steady; it comes to abide in its own home.
naam vihaajhay naam la-ay naam rahay samaa-ay.
It purchases the Naam, chants the Naam, and remains absorbed in the Naam.
Dhaavat thamiH-aa satgur mili-ai dasvaa du-aar paa-i-aa.
The outgoing, wandering soul, upon meeting the True Guru, opens the Tenth Gate.
tithai amrit bhojan sahj Dhun upjai jit sabad jagat thamiH rahaa-i-aa.
There, Ambrosial Nectar is food and the celestial music resounds; the world is held spell-bound by the music of the Word.
tah anayk vaajay sadaa anad hai sachay rahi-aa samaa-ay.
The many strains of the unstruck melody resound there, as one merges in Truth.
i-o kahai naanak satgur mili-ai Dhaavat thamiH-aa nij ghar vasi-aa aa-ay. ||4||
Thus says Nanak: by meeting the True Guru, the wandering soul becomes steady, and comes to dwell in the home of its own self. ||4||

In plain words

When the restless mind finally meets true wisdom, it stops wandering and settles into its own true home.

A hidden door opens inside, and a sweetness and quiet music fill you — a peace so deep the whole world seems to hush and listen.

When the restless mind comes home to itself, a hidden door opens onto deep sweetness and quiet.
The deeper layer

The wandering mind, meeting the Guru, is held steady and comes home to itself (apnai ghar). And the verse opens onto Gurbani's inner treasures: the Tenth Gate (dasam duaar) — a 'secret door' inside, beyond the nine openings of the body, where the deepest awareness lives — swings open, and there is Ambrosial Nectar and celestial music, the anhad (unstruck melody). It's the same inner music of the earlier shabad (935), described as so beautiful the world is held spellbound. The restless searching ends not in a far place but in a hidden room that was inside you all along.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your restless mind finally settle and come home?
