Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O my mind — you are made of light itself. Remember where you came from.
The One you're looking for is right here with you. Know your own true source, and you'll understand your whole life.
This is one of the most treasured lines in all of Gurbani: man too(n) jot saroop hai — apnaa mool pachhaan. 'O my mind, you are the very form of Light — recognize your Source.' It is the deepest thing the whole Chhant, maybe the whole raag, has to say to a child: you are not separate from the light you're seeking; you are made of it. The searching mind has been looking everywhere for a One that is, in fact, its own origin. To 'recognize your Source' (mool pachhaan) is to remember that the light in you and the Light of everything are the same light. From that one recognition, the verse says, everything else — life, death, love — becomes clear.
What might change if you really believed there was light inside you, part of the light in everything?
