Verse 6 of 10

Pride Dims the Very Light You're Made Of

man tooN gaarab ati-aa gaarab ladi-aa jaahi.
O mind, you are so full of pride; loaded with pride, you shall depart.
maa-i-aa mohnee mohi-aa fir fir joonee bhavaahi.
The fascinating Maya has fascinated you, over and over again, and lured you into reincarnation.
gaarab laagaa jaahi mugaDh man ant ga-i-aa pachhutaavhay.
Clinging to pride, you shall depart, O foolish mind, and in the end, you shall regret and repent.
ahaNkaar tisnaa rog lagaa birthaa janam gavaavhay.
You are afflicted with the diseases of ego and desire, and you are wasting your life away in vain.
manmukh mugaDh cheeteh naahee agai ga-i-aa pachhutaavhay.
The foolish self-willed manmukh does not remember the Lord, and shall regret and repent hereafter.
i-o kahai naanak man tooN gaarab ati-aa gaarab ladi-aa jaavhay. ||6||
Thus says Nanak: O mind, you are full of pride; loaded with pride, you shall depart. ||6||

In plain words

O my mind, so puffed up with pride — all that heaviness only weighs you down.

The glitter keeps dazzling you again and again. Let the pride go, or it becomes a burden you carry everywhere.

Pride is a heavy load — it dims the very light you're made of and only tires you out.
The deeper layer

Right after naming the mind as light, the verse names what dims it: abhimaan — pride, self-importance. The contrast is deliberate — you are luminous by nature, but pride loads you down (bhaaru), makes the light heavy. And Maya (the glitter) keeps re-fascinating the proud mind, pulling it in circles. The tone is a parent's worried honesty, not condemnation: pride isn't a crime that makes you bad, it's a weight that makes you tired and keeps you from your own lightness. Set it down, and you rise back to what you are.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that showing off or being 'better than' actually feels heavy, not good?
