In plain words

A heart joined to the One overflows with happiness.

That heart is glad, and its glory is complete.

It sings the One's praise and finds honor, greatness, and joy. The One is always with it.

Every gift and all nine treasures are there. Its home lacks nothing at all.

Its speech turns sweet, it follows its Beloved, and the bond it shares lasts forever.

Nanak says what the Guru's words taught him: a heart joined to the One overflows with happiness.

A heart that has enough turns gentle — contentment makes your words and ways sweeter.
The deeper layer

A heart that has enough turns gentle.

Jaa ka-o raam bhataar taa kai anad ghanaa — the one who has the One as her Beloved has great joy. Her home lacks nothing. Everything is there.

The verse even names the nav nidh, the nine treasures, every kind of riches. But the real riches are two simple things: sweet speech, and a bond that lasts forever.

Notice how the inside shows on the outside. When the heart is full, the words turn sweet. Think of how kind you feel after a good meal with your family, compared to when you are hungry and grumpy. A heart that has enough stops being sharp and grabby. When you are not worried about missing something, being gentle comes easily.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed you're kinder to others when you feel happy and content inside?
