Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Come, friends — let's give ourselves to serving the good-hearted.
Let's grind their grain and wash their feet, gladly, and set down our pride.
Let's drop the big self, and our troubles will go. Let's not show off.
Let's hold to the One's shelter, follow the One, and be happy with whatever comes.
Let's become servants of the One's servants, and let go of sadness. With palms pressed together, let's stay awake to the One day and night.
Nanak says what the Guru's words taught him: come, friends — let's give ourselves to serving the good-hearted.
The way to let go of pride is to quietly do good for others.
Aa-o sakhee sant paas sayvaa laagee-ai — come, friends, let us serve the good and holy people. Grind their grain. Wash their feet.
These are the plainest, most everyday jobs. That is exactly the point. Real love shows itself in humble, hands-on help, not in big shows.
And serving melts away the proud self. Taj aap mitai santaap — drop the big "me," and the troubles go. Do not show off. Become a helper of the One's helpers.
You cannot think your way out of showing off. You do your way out. Stacking chairs after an event, or helping clean up the langar, the free shared kitchen, quietly cures the pride that no lecture could.
What's a humble, behind-the-scenes way you could help someone this week?
