Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I've taken shelter with the One who belongs to every living thing — and my life turned fearless, my worries gone.
I've come to know the One as my mother, my father, my child, my friend — my closest family of all.
The Guru led me to hold the One close. Good people sing the One's pure praise.
The One's goodness has no end. No one can say how much the One is worth.
There is only One, the Master no eye can see. Nanak holds on to the One's protection.
The One is like a mother, a father and a best friend, all at the same time.
The verse begins with feeling safe. Nirbha-o bha-ay paraan chintaa sagal lahee — my life became fearless, and all my worries went away. Nirbha-o means without fear. Chintaa means worry.
Then comes a very tender picture. Maat pitaa sut meet — mother, father, child, friend. The One is not a far-off ruler. The One is every loving relationship rolled into one. Whatever kind of love you need most — a mother's comfort, a father's steadiness, a friend's company — the One is that for you. Think of a family photo with everyone who loves you in it. The One is in every face. So you are never without family.
Which kind of love do you most need right now — and can you imagine finding all of them in one place?
