Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 34
Verse 4 of 5

Even Your Understanding Is Given to You

jaisaa tooN karahi taisaa ko ho-ay.
As You make us, so we become.
tujh bin doojaa naahee ko-ay.
Without You, there is no other at all.
jayhee tooN mat deh tayhee ko paavai.
As is the understanding which You bestow, so do we receive.
tuDh aapay bhaavai tivai chalaavai. ||3||
As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us. ||3||

In plain words

However You shape us, that is what we become; without You there is simply no one else.

We understand exactly as much as You give us to understand, and wherever Your flow leads, we go.

Even your understanding is given to you — you grasp exactly as much as you're given to grasp.
The deeper layer

Even how much we understand is a gift from the One.

"As You make us, so we become." We depend on the One completely. Even our understanding is handed to us. We grasp as much as we are given.

This balances the drunk-elephant mind from the verse before. A mind that thinks too much of itself needs to remember this. Its best ideas are on loan. Think of a library book. You can enjoy it and learn from it, but it was lent to you. "As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us." That is Hukam, the flow of existence, like a river current that carries us along.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to think that your best insights might be gifts rather than achievements?
