A Calm Dignity Is Close for Anyone Who Quiets Down

Says Kabir, the state of supreme dignity is never far from those who conquer the five demons of the body passions. ||4||2||11||

In plain words

Kabir says: a state of deep, calm dignity is never far away.

It is close for anyone who quiets the five noisy troublemakers within.

A calm, quiet dignity is close at hand for anyone who lets their noisy inner troublemakers settle down.
The deeper layer

This one says a calm, strong peace is close for anyone who lets the noise inside settle.

kahat kabeer panch jo chooray — Kabir says, those who calm the panch, the five. These are the five noisy pulls inside us: grabbing, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. Their noise was the "show" that went quiet all through this shabad.

tin tay naahi param pad dooray — for them, param pad, the highest state, is not far away. It is close, not some faraway prize.

When the five troublemakers calm down, a person finds a calm dignity. It needs nothing and proves nothing. Think of a lake when the wind stops. The water goes still, and you can see all the way to the bottom. The whole shabad has moved this way: the show ends, the smoke clears, the One comes into view, and peace remains.

A Question to Sit With

What does calm, quiet dignity look like in a person you admire?
