The Soul Is Wed the Moment the Ego Goes Quiet

guroo du-aarai hamraa vee-aahu je ho-aa jaaN saho mili-aa taaN jaani-aa.
When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him.
ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
tihu lokaa meh sabad ravi-aa hai aap ga-i-aa man maani-aa. ||2||
The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2||

In plain words

I was wed at the Guru's door, and there I met my Beloved and truly came to know Him.

His Word is humming through every world; and the moment my ego went quiet, my heart was happy.

The soul is wed to the One the moment the ego finally goes quiet.
The deeper layer

This one says the soul is joined to the One the moment the ego goes quiet.

Guroo du-aarai hamraa vee-aahu je ho-aa — "my wedding took place at the Guru's door." The Guru is the one who joins the soul to the One. When I met my Husband, I came to know Him.

Tihu lokaa meh sabad ravi-aa hai — the Word fills all three worlds, everything there is. Then the condition is stated exactly: aap ga-i-aa man maani-aa — when the self went away, the mind was glad.

The self here is haumai, the "me, me, me" voice. The wedding cannot happen while it fills the room. Think of trying to hear a friend while you are talking nonstop. When you go quiet, you finally hear them. The quieting of the self opens the door.

A Question to Sit With

What gets easier, or happier, when your need to be the center of things goes quiet?
