I am bothered by my mother-in-law, Maya, and loved by my father-in-law, the Lord. I fear even the name of my husband's elder brother, Death.

O my mates and companions, my husband's sister, misunderstanding has seized me, and I am burning with the pain of separation from my husband's younger brother, divine knowledge. ||1||

In plain words

Inside me lives a whole family of feelings — some that trouble me and some that I love.

The grasping pull nags at me, misunderstanding grips me, and I ache from being far from the wisdom I long for.

Your inner life is like a crowded household of feelings — some troubling, some good — all living under one roof.
The deeper layer

This one says your heart is like a house full of relatives, and some are easier to live with than others.

Kabir tells it as a little story. He pictures his feelings as a big family under one roof. Maya — the pull to grab and want more — nags him like a grumpy in-law. Misunderstanding grips him like a bossy sister-in-law. And he aches because he is far from the wisdom he loves.

Think of a busy kitchen at a family gathering. Everyone is talking at once. Some voices lift you up. Some drag you down. That is what the inside of a person can feel like.

Kabir makes it playful, but the point is real. Many feelings live in us together. The first step to peace is to notice them all. Then you can choose which ones you want to feed.

A Question to Sit With

What are some of the different 'feelings' that live inside you, pulling in different directions?
