Holy Costumes Can't Stop the Robbery Inside

aDhik ti-aas bhaykh baho karai.
Excessive thirst for Maya makes people wear all sorts of religious robes.
dukh bikhi-aa sukh tan parharai.
The pain of corruption destroys the body's peace.
kaam kroDh antar Dhan hirai.
Sexual desire and anger steal the wealth of the self within.
dubiDhaa chhod naam nistarai. ||2||
But by abandoning duality, one is emancipated through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

A burning thirst for things drives people to dress up in all kinds of holy costumes.

The ache of all that grasping wrecks the body's peace; lust and anger quietly rob the treasure inside you.

But let go of the sense that you are separate, and the Name sets you free.

Holy costumes can't help when lust and anger are robbing you from the inside.
The deeper layer

Religious robes worn out of "thirst for Maya" are exposed as costume — outward holiness masking inward greed. Meanwhile kaam and krodh (lust and anger, two of the Panch Vikaar) "steal the wealth of the self within". The cure is not a better costume but "abandoning duality" — dropping the separateness that fuels the grasping in the first place.

A Question to Sit With

What "costume" do people sometimes wear to look good while something else is going on inside?
