ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੁਜਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gurmat saachee hujat door.
Receiving the True Teachings from the Guru, arguments depart.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਲਾਗੈ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
bahut si-aanap laagai Dhoor.
But through excessive cleverness, one is only plastered with dirt.
ਲਾਗੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚ ਨਾਇ ॥
laagee mail mitai sach naa-ay.
The filth of attachment is removed by the True Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
gur parsaad rahai liv laa-ay. ||1||
By Guru's Grace, one remains lovingly attached to the Lord. ||1||

When you truly take in the Guru's teaching, the arguing stops.
But pile on too much cleverness, and you only smear yourself with dirt.
The grime of attachment is washed away by the True Name; and by grace, you stay lovingly held to the One.
Real understanding ends the arguing; too much cleverness only makes a mess.
A sharp line between receiving truth and arguing about it: real teaching ends the disputing, while "excessive cleverness" only "plasters one with dirt." Cleverness here is not intelligence but the ego's compulsion to win — and it dirties rather than cleans. The actual cleansing agent is the Name, and staying clean is itself grace.
