Real Beauty Is a Heart So Full It Wants to Dance

ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਤਉ ਪਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ॥

Your veil shall be true only if
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਕੂਦਹਿ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਚੈ ॥੩॥

you skip, dance and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Here's what truly makes you beautiful: skipping and dancing and singing with joy about the One.

That's the real adornment.

What truly makes you beautiful isn't looking proper — it's a heart so full of joy it wants to dance and sing.
The deeper layer

Now Kabir reveals what genuine adornment looks like, and it's wonderfully joyful: your veil is true only if you skip, dance, and sing the Praises of the Lord. Real beauty isn't a modest covering or a proper appearance; it's a life lit up with joyful devotion — dancing, singing, delighting in the One. Notice how un-solemn this is: the true 'adornment' is joy, movement, celebration. Kabir flips the whole idea of virtue-as-restraint into virtue-as-delight. For a child, this is a liberating and happy teaching: what makes you truly beautiful isn't holding still and looking proper — it's a heart so full of love it wants to dance and sing. Joy in the One is the loveliest thing a person can wear.

A Question to Sit With

When has joy made someone light up and look beautiful, no matter what they were wearing?
