A Mind Turned on Itself Gets Tangled in the Unreal

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ॥
manmukh kee mat koorh vi-aapee.
The intellect of the self-willed manmukh is engrossed in falsehood.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਪਾਪਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੀ ॥੨॥
bin har simran paap santaapee. ||2||
Without the meditative remembrance of the Lord, it suffers in sin. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The mind that follows only itself gets tangled up in what is false.

Without remembering the One, it suffers in its own wrongdoing.

A mind turned only on itself gets tangled in what isn't real — and suffers from it.
The deeper layer

This one says a mind that faces only itself gets lost in what isn't real.

The manmukh is the self-facing mind, the one that listens only to itself. Manmukh kee mat koorh vi-aapee — its thinking gets wrapped up in what is false. Bin har simran paap santaapee — without remembering the One, it suffers in its own wrongdoing.

That pain is not a punishment sent from outside. It grows from inside, like a headache from staring at a screen too long. When you live turned away from what is real, the hurt comes on its own. Turning back toward the One is how it eases.

A Question to Sit With

What happens to your mood when you get stuck circling around only your own concerns?
