Drop the Meanness and Goodness Grows

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੇਵਹੁ ॥
durmat ti-aag laahaa kichh layvhu.
Renounce evil-mindedness, and you shall reap the rewards.
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਹੁ ॥੩॥
jo upjai so alakh abhayvhu. ||3||
Whoever is born, comes through the Unknowable and Mysterious Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let go of meanness, and you will reap good.

Whoever is born comes from the One beyond all knowing.

Drop the meanness, and good grows; everyone alive came from the same mystery.
The deeper layer

This one says: let go of meanness, and good things grow.

Durmat means a mean or crooked way of thinking. Durmat ti-aag laahaa kichh layvhu — drop the meanness, and you will gain something good. It works like a garden. Pull out the weeds, and the good plants have room to grow.

The second line is a quiet reminder of where we come from. Jo upjai so alakh abhayvhu — everyone who is born comes from the One who is beyond knowing. You did not make yourself, and neither did anyone else. We all came the same way, from the same mystery. That is a good reason to be humble and kind toward every other being.

A Question to Sit With

What good might grow in you if you let go of one mean or bitter habit?
