Even the Understanding That Changes Us Is Given

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
gur parsaadee aisee mat aavai.
By Guru's Grace, such wisdom comes to me,
ਤਾਂ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕੰਤੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
taaN kaaman kantai man bhaavai. ||3||
so that the soul-bride becomes pleasing to the Mind of the Husband Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By the Guru's grace, this wisdom comes to me.

Then the bride becomes dear to her Beloved's heart.

Even the understanding that changes us is something we are given.
The deeper layer

This one says that even the wisdom that changes us is a gift.

Gur parsaadee means "by the Guru's grace," a gift freely given. Aisee mat aavai means "such understanding comes to me." Then the bride, which is the soul, becomes dear to her Beloved, the One.

Notice the order. She does not get wise all on her own and then earn love. The Guru opens her eyes first. Then she becomes pleasing.

Think of learning to read. You did not just wake up one day able to do it. Someone sat beside you and pointed to the letters. Growing wise works like that too. This whole shabad gently gives the credit for the bride's waking up to grace.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what opened your eyes to something you could not have seen on your own?
