Some Longings Feel Like Not Being Able to Breathe

ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

How do I know what will happen to me, O my mother?

har darsan bin rahan na jaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, I cannot survive. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How can I know what will become of me, Mother?

Without seeing my Beloved, I cannot survive.

Some longings are so deep that being apart feels like not being able to breathe.
The deeper layer

A second refrain, even rawer: "without the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, I cannot survive." This is viraha at full intensity — separation experienced as a threat to life itself. The cry to "Mother" gives it the helplessness of a child who cannot soothe herself.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel you genuinely could not live without?
