Even the Wish to Remember Is a Gift to Ask For

If You give it to me, I will chant Your Name. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Lord, You made me.

If You give me the gift, I will sing Your Name.

Even the wish to remember the One is itself a gift to be asked for.
The deeper layer

This one asks for the gift of remembering the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. mayray saahib ha-o keetaa tayraa — my Master, You made me. jaa too deh japee naa-o tayraa — if You give it, I will say Your Name.

Even the wish to remember the One is a gift. We do not make it all by ourselves. Think of a candle. It can shine, but only after someone lights it.

This is deep humility. Even the start of loving the One comes from the One, not from our own cleverness.

A Question to Sit With

What good impulse in you might really be a gift you were given?
